The British government has removed Hay\u2019at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the former al-Qaeda affiliate that led the Syrian rebel alliance which helped oust President Bashar al-Assad, from its list of banned terrorist organizations, Reuters reported. HTS was designated as a terrorist group in 2017, making it illegal to support or join the organization.<\/p>\n
The UK government said the decision aims to facilitate closer engagement with Syria\u2019s new administration and support efforts to dismantle remnants of Assad\u2019s chemical weapons program. Officials added that London would continue to push for progress toward stability and accountability in Syria and the wider region.<\/p>\n
The move follows the United States\u2019 earlier decision to revoke HTS\u2019s terrorist designation.
