\nAt least 17 civilians were killed and 346 others injured in Spin Boldak district of Kandahar province during heavy cross-border fighting between the Taliban and the Pakistani military, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said in a statement Thursday as reported by Amu TV.<\/p>\n
UNAMA said it had received credible reports of \u201csignificant civilian casualties,\u201d including women and children, in what it described as one of the deadliest border incidents in recent years. The mission said it continues to assess the full scale of the damage.<\/p>\n
The violence peaked on Wednesday in Spin Boldak, where the highest number of casualties on the Afghan side has been recorded so far. The clashes are part of a surge in cross-border hostilities that began on Oct. 10, leading to dozens of deaths and injuries across multiple provinces.<\/p>\n
UNAMA also documented at least 16 civilian casualties\u2014one killed and 15 injured\u2014from earlier cross-border clashes in Paktika, Paktia, Kunar and Helmand provinces.<\/p>\n
The U.N. mission welcomed the announcement of a cease-fire between the Taliban and Pakistan but stressed the need for a lasting end to hostilities.<\/p>\n
\u201cUNAMA calls on all parties to bring a lasting end to hostilities to protect civilians and prevent further loss of life,\u201d the mission said. It also reminded both sides of their obligations under international humanitarian law to adhere to the principles of distinction, proportionality, and precaution to prevent civilian harm.<\/p>\n
