Sudan is facing a rapidly escalating cholera outbreak as ongoing conflict, mass displacement, and heavy rains fuel the spread of waterborne diseases, CARE reported. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of a \u201cconcerning case fatality rate\u201d of 2.8%, nearly three times the emergency threshold, signaling the crisis is spiraling out of control.<\/p>\n
According to Sudan\u2019s Federal Ministry of Health, more than 120,000 cholera cases and over 3,300 deaths have been recorded nationwide since May, with the highest tolls reported in South and East Darfur and South Kordofan. Over 7.4 million people are internally displaced, more than half of them women and girls, with limited access to clean water and healthcare.<\/p>\n
CARE Sudan\u2019s emergency response has reached about 58,000 people through Cholera Treatment Centers, Oral Rehydration Points, hygiene campaigns, and water chlorination efforts. However, the organization warns that the response remains severely underfunded, with shortages of medical supplies, chlorine, and hygiene kits.<\/p>\n
CARE has called for urgent international funding and protection for health workers and facilities, stressing that without immediate support, the outbreak could deepen an already devastating humanitarian crisis.
