The ruling conservative party, which holds a majority in the 300-seat parliament, is set to pass the measure despite widespread opposition from labor unions and political rivals.<\/p>\n
The new law permits extended work hours in the private sector for up to 37 days a year, provided employees give their consent. Labor Minister Niki Kerameus emphasized that the measure is optional and designed to meet seasonal demand, particularly in the services and tourism industries. She also noted that proposals for even longer working hours had been rejected.<\/p>\n
Unions and opposition parties have condemned the reform, warning it could lead to worker exploitation and undermine labor rights. Thousands participated in nationwide strikes and protests this month, arguing that employees may face pressure or dismissal if they refuse longer shifts.<\/p>\n
