\nThe Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has sharply criticized the Nobel Committee\u2019s decision to award this year\u2019s Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader Mar\u00eda Corina Machado, calling the move \u201cunconscionable\u201d and \u201ca betrayal of moral consistency.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a statement posted Friday on its official Facebook page, CAIR accused Machado of supporting \u201cIsrael\u2019s racist Likud Party\u201d and of participating earlier this year in a European conference that included right-wing figures Geert Wilders and Marine Le Pen. The organization said the event \u201copenly called for a new Reconquista,\u201d a term historically associated with the expulsion of Muslims and Jews from Spain in the 15th century.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Nobel Peace Prize should go to individuals who bravely advocate justice for all people, not to politicians who support racism, bigotry and fascism abroad,\u201d the post read. CAIR urged Machado to renounce what it described as her \u201csupport for the Likud Party and anti-Muslim fascism in Europe,\u201d warning that failure to do so would undermine the prize\u2019s integrity.<\/p>\n
The Nobel Committee, in its official announcement, praised Machado as \u201cone of the most extraordinary examples of civilian courage in Latin America,\u201d citing her leadership in uniting Venezuela\u2019s fragmented opposition and her \u201csteadfast commitment to peaceful democratic change.\u201d The committee also noted that she has continued to live in Venezuela despite facing threats and political persecution.<\/p>\n
CAIR contrasted this decision with what it called \u201cthe moral courage\u201d of students, journalists, and medical workers who have spoken out against \u201cthe genocide in Gaza,\u201d arguing that such individuals better represent the ideals of the Peace Prize.<\/p>\n
