Working in the 1980s at the University of California, Berkeley, the laureates conducted experiments using an electrical circuit. Their work successfully demonstrated that the normally microscopic and bizarre properties of the quantum world\u2014such as quantum tunneling (a particle passing through a barrier)\u2014could be observed in a system large enough to be held in the hand.
