Egypt Accuses Ethiopia of Reckless Dam Management Behind Nile Floods

\nEgypt has accused Ethiopia of \u201creckless and irresponsible\u201d management of its Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), claiming that unilateral dam operations have exacerbated flooding and pose a direct threat to lives and property in downstream states, according to Anadolu Agency.<\/p>\n
In an official statement, Egypt\u2019s Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation said it had been monitoring the Nile flood situation and linked recent floods to \u201creckless unilateral measures by Ethiopia\u201d in operating what it calls an \u201cillegal dam\u201d that violates international law. The ministry asserted that Ethiopia\u2019s lack of transparency and coordination with downstream nations undermines basic principles of responsibility.<\/p>\n
Egypt also warned that sudden surges of water from GERD, compounded by delayed rains in Sudan and elevated levels in the White Nile, have flooded farmlands and submerged villages in Sudan and are now threatening areas along Egypt\u2019s Nile Delta.<\/p>\n
To counter rising water levels, Egyptian authorities have implemented precautionary measures across riverbank regions. Local administrations in the northern governorates of Beheira and Monufia have ordered evacuations of residents and farmers living near the Nile, particularly in areas vulnerable to inundation.<\/p>\n
