The discussion intensified after Social Security Minister Sanni Grahn-Laasonen wrote on social media that the burqa and niqab are \u201cunsuitable for Finnish classrooms.\u201d Her comments followed a proposal by 15 lawmakers from the Finns Party calling for a nationwide ban on face coverings in public spaces.<\/p>\n
In response, 40 Muslim organizations issued a joint statement expressing \u201cdeep disappointment and concern,\u201d warning that the debate reflects \u201cmanufactured populist rhetoric\u201d rather than a real problem.
