Southern Chinese cities shut schools, suspended flights and scaled back businesses on Tuesday as they prepared for Super Typhoon Ragasa, media outlets reported. The storm, with sustained winds of around 220 kph (137 mph), is expected to make landfall between Zhuhai and Zhanjiang in Guangdong province on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Hong Kong\u2019s observatory said it would issue storm warning signal No. 8, the city\u2019s third-highest alert. Authorities forecast storm surges of up to five meters in coastal areas, raising fears of flooding similar to damage caused by Typhoons Hato in 2017 and Mangkhut in 2018.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of flights were canceled in Hong Kong, while Shenzhen airport suspended operations from Tuesday night. Schools were closed in Hong Kong, Macao, Shenzhen, Foshan and Haikou, with Macao ordering evacuations and bridge closures ahead of the storm\u2019s approach.<\/p>\n
The typhoon has already battered Taiwan, where at least six people were injured, thousands evacuated, and more than 8,000 households lost power. In the Philippines, Ragasa triggered landslides and flooding, leaving three people dead, five missing, and displacing more than 17,000.
