Scientists have developed an advanced artificial intelligence tool capable of predicting an individual\u2019s risk for more than 1,000 diseases and forecasting health changes up to two decades in advance, The Guardian reported. The generative AI model, named Delphi-2M, was created by researchers from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, the German Cancer Research Centre, and the University of Copenhagen, using techniques similar to those in large language models.<\/p>\n
Delphi-2M analyzes medical history, lifestyle factors such as smoking and obesity, age, and sex to estimate the likelihood and timing of diseases including cancer, diabetes, and heart conditions. It was trained on anonymized data from 400,000 UK Biobank participants and 1.9 million patients from the Danish national registry.<\/p>\n
Unlike existing tools that focus on single diseases, Delphi-2M assesses multiple conditions simultaneously over an extended period. This capability allows it to generate synthetic future health trajectories, providing a comprehensive forecast of potential disease burdens.<\/p>\n
Ewan Birney, interim director at EMBL, anticipates that the tool could soon assist clinicians in offering personalized health advice, improving preventative care.
