\nOn the 25th of Rabi\u2019 al-Awwal in 41 AH, Imam Hasan ibn Ali (peace be upon him) concluded a historic truce with Muawiya ibn Abu Sufyan (may the eternal Divine curse be upon them both) to end the civil war among Muslims for the welfare of the community.<\/p>\n
The terms of the agreement were designed to protect the rights and lives of Muslims, particularly the Shi\u2019a. Muawiya pledged not to insult Imam Ali (peace be upon him), to respect the lives of Shi\u2019a, and to safeguard their rights. The treaty also stipulated the distribution of one million dirhams among the orphans of the battles of Jamal and Siffin, and that Muawiya would not appoint a successor or assume unilateral control after Imam Hasan\u2019s death.<\/p>\n
Imam Hasan (peace be upon him) did not recognize Muawiya as the \u201cCommander of the Faithful\u201d and required him to govern according to the Qur\u2019an and the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his pure family).
