The protests, which began on Monday over what critics described as excessive benefits for parliamentarians, escalated into riots by Thursday after a motorcycle taxi driver was killed during a police crackdown. Clashes led to five deaths, and several homes and government buildings were vandalized or burned.<\/p>\n
Speaking from the Presidential Palace alongside party leaders, Prabowo condemned the violence, calling some acts \u201cterrorism\u201d and \u201ctreason.\u201d He instructed police and military forces to take firm action against looters and those damaging public and private property.
