UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed alarm over the “relentless attacks” by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the city of El Fasher, warning of potential violations of international humanitarian law and human rights law. The UN has verified that at least 125 civilians have been killed in the area since August 11, although the actual death toll is believed to be higher. Guterres has called for an immediate ceasefire and the safe delivery of aid to the city, which has been under siege for more than 500 days.<\/p>\n
In a related warning, a senior UN official, Edem Wosornu, has stated that nearly two-thirds of Sudan’s population\u2014approximately 30 million people\u2014are facing a humanitarian emergency and are in desperate need of assistance.
