Supreme Court Stays Trial Against Ashoka University Professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad

\nThe Supreme Court of India has stayed the trial proceedings against Professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad of Ashoka University, Muslim Mirror reported. The court restrained the trial court from taking cognisance of the chargesheet filed by the Haryana Special Investigation Team (SIT) related to allegations stemming from his social media posts on Operation Sindoor.<\/p>\n
A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi also barred the framing of charges in the case. The SIT, appointed by the Supreme Court to investigate two FIRs against Mahmudabad, informed the bench that it had filed a closure report in one case, while a chargesheet was submitted on August 22 in the other.<\/p>\n
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Mahmudabad, criticized the chargesheet as \u201cmost unfortunate,\u201d pointing out that the charges under Section 152 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, related to sedition, are under legal challenge.<\/p>\n
The court directed Sibal to review the chargesheet and prepare a chart of alleged offences. Earlier, Mahmudabad was arrested on May 18 following FIRs lodged in Sonipat district, with accusations including acts endangering India\u2019s sovereignty.
