UN Reports 89 Killed in RSF Attacks in Darfur

\nAccording to a report by Al Jazeera, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has stated that a 10-day period of “brutal” attacks by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the Darfur region has resulted in the deaths of at least 89 people. The UN human rights office fears the actual death toll may be higher.<\/p>\n
The attacks occurred between August 11 and August 20 in el-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, and the nearby Abu Shouk displacement camp. The deceased include at least 57 people killed in attacks on August 11, and another 32 killed between August 16-20. The UN noted that 16 of the recent civilian killings appear to have been summary executions.<\/p>\n
The spokesperson for the UN human rights commissioner, Jeremy Laurence, said that the attacks are “unacceptable” and “deepen our concerns about ethnically motivated violence.” He added that among the dead were civilians from the African Zaghawa and Berti tribes.<\/p>\n
El-Fasher is the last stronghold of the Sudanese army in Darfur and has been under siege by the RSF since May 2024. The conflict in Sudan has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced over 14 million, and led to a severe humanitarian crisis.
