\nScientists have found a way to mimic a rare genetic mutation that makes people resistant to almost all viruses, Anadolu Agency reported. The new research, published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, used a method similar to mRNA vaccines to temporarily trigger this viral immunity in lab animals.<\/p>\n
The study focused on a rare mutation that leads to a deficiency in a protein called ISG15. People with this deficiency have an immune system that is always a little bit on alert, which allows it to fight off viruses like the flu and measles with only minor symptoms.<\/p>\n
In the lab, researchers were able to safely recreate this effect. They found that the treatment produced ten different proteins that blocked viruses at various stages of infection. The protective effect lasted for up to four days and did not interfere with the animals’ normal immune systems.<\/p>\n
