Amnesty International Calls for Rule of Law in Afghanistan

On the fourth anniversary of the Taliban’s takeover, Amnesty International has called for the return of rule of law and democratic governance in Afghanistan. The organization described the current judicial system as “unjust and arbitrary” and urged for the restoration of formal legal frameworks in line with international human rights standards.<\/p>\n
In response, the Taliban’s Ministry of Justice announced the completion of 140 legislative documents over the past year. These new laws, a majority of which are based on the Quran, Hadith, and Hanafi jurisprudence, include the Financial Accountability Law and a law to prevent the smuggling of food and medicine.<\/p>\n
The ministry stated that five new laws have been approved by the Taliban’s leader and will be published soon. International organizations have criticized these measures, pointing out the suspension of the 2004 constitution and the abolition of laws protecting fundamental freedoms.
