The new film is made from cellulose extracted from grapevine canes, which are typically pruned and burned each winter. The research, led by Associate Professor Srinivas Janaswamy, aims to address the widespread problems associated with conventional plastics, such as their petroleum-based origin, resistance to degradation, and contribution to microplastic pollution.<\/p>\n
The resulting film is transparent and strong, with the ability to biodegrade in soil within just 17 days without leaving behind any harmful residue.
