Uganda Faces Refugee Surge Amid Drastic Funding Cuts, UN Warns

\nUganda, already Africa’s largest host of refugees, is on the verge of its refugee population reaching two million, Anadolu Agency reported citing the UN refugee agency (UNHCR). This surge is driven by escalating crises in Sudan, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with an average of 600 people arriving daily since the beginning of 2025.<\/p>\n
The UNHCR has warned that this crisis is unfolding amid one of the worst humanitarian funding crises in decades. Emergency funding is expected to run out in September, and the agency is only able to provide $5 per month per refugee, far below the estimated need of $16.<\/p>\n
Without immediate and sustained international support, the UNHCR predicts an increase in malnutrition among children, sexual violence against girls, and a lack of basic shelter for families.
