Around 50 soldiers were reportedly killed in an assault on a military base in northern Burkina Faso, according to a local leader and a resident, as reported by ABC News agency.
\nThe attack took place on Monday at a base in Dargo, located in Boulsa province. <\/p>\n
Sources, who spoke to the Associated Press under condition of anonymity due to fear of retaliation, said that approximately 100 militants stormed the base, looting and setting it on fire after killing the troops.<\/p>\n
The armed group Jama\u2019at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), which is affiliated with al-Qaeda, is suspected of being behind the attack. JNIM is one of several extremist groups active in the region and has been linked to numerous deadly assaults across West Africa.<\/p>\n
As of Tuesday, Burkina Faso\u2019s military authorities had not issued any official statement about the incident. The West African nation has been grappling with escalating violence, with militant groups reportedly controlling large areas beyond the capital. <\/p>\n
