China announced plans to establish an international organization for artificial intelligence cooperation, aiming to promote global collaboration and position itself as an alternative to U.S. leadership in AI, Reuters reported. Speaking at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, Premier Li Qiang emphasized China\u2019s desire to regulate AI development collectively and share its advancements, particularly with the Global South.<\/p>\n
Without naming the U.S., Li cautioned against AI becoming dominated by a few countries and corporations. He called for equal access to AI technology and proposed the creation of a broadly accepted global AI governance framework. Li also highlighted key challenges, including limited AI chip supply and restrictions on talent exchange.<\/p>\n
The Shanghai conference, held amid rising U.S.-China tech tensions, featured over 800 companies and 3,000 AI products. Despite U.S. export restrictions on advanced AI chips and equipment, China continues to make significant AI progress.<\/p>\n
China\u2019s Vice Foreign Minister proposed locating the new AI body\u2019s headquarters in Shanghai and introduced a global AI governance action plan to encourage international cooperation. Major firms such as Huawei, Alibaba, Tesla, Amazon, and Google participated in the event, along with notable figures like Geoffrey Hinton and French envoy Anne Bouverot.
