Report Reveals Black Women in UK Often Ignored During Childbirth

Nearly half of Black women in the UK said they raised concerns during labour, but many felt those concerns were not properly addressed, The Guardian reported, citing the largest study to date on Black maternal health. The research, conducted by Five X More, examined the maternity experiences of over 1,000 Black and mixed-race individuals pregnant between July 2021 and March 2025.<\/p>\n
Findings revealed that 54% of respondents faced challenges with healthcare professionals, and nearly a quarter did not receive requested pain relief\u201440% of whom were not given an explanation. Of the 45% who voiced concerns during labour, fewer than half felt adequately heard or supported.<\/p>\n
The report highlights ongoing disparities, with Black women in the UK being up to four times more likely to die during childbirth than white women. Only 60% rated their antenatal care as good or high quality, and 28% reported discrimination. Few were informed about how to lodge complaints.<\/p>\n
The findings have prompted strong responses from campaigners and lawmakers.
