Mental health initiative inspired by a millennium of Islamic psychology marks its 10th anniversary

\nThe Lantern Initiative, a UK-based Muslim mental health organisation, is celebrating its 10th anniversary, Hyphenonline.com reported. Founded in 2015 in Milton Keynes, the initiative began as coffee mornings aimed at reducing loneliness among young Muslim mothers. Over the past decade, it has expanded significantly, now operating with numerous volunteers and hosting international retreats, conferences, and youth programs.<\/p>\n
The organisation draws inspiration from Islamic psychology pioneers such as Abu Zayd al-Balkhi, who developed early cognitive behavioural techniques, and Avicenna (Ibn Sina), known as the \u201cPrince of Physicians.\u201d These historical figures\u2019 work forms the foundation for the Lantern Initiative\u2019s faith-rooted mental health support, offering healing practices aligned with Islamic principles.<\/p>\n
Managing director and co-founder Safura Houghton explained that their retreats, held in the UK, Spain, and Uzbekistan, provide participants with deep insights into mental health support through faith-based frameworks. The Lantern Initiative\u2019s flagship program, Healing Minds, is a women-only event featuring panels of female speakers discussing mental health and wellbeing from an Islamic perspective. This program has been held in six cities and consistently sells out.<\/p>\n
Funding comes from local business donations and council grants, enabling many free or low-cost events. The organisation also aims to increase access to Muslim therapists, addressing gaps in mainstream NHS and private counselling services. Lantern is actively engaging with imams and faith leaders to integrate counselling within mosques and Islamic centres.
