Oxford University Press to halt publishing China-sponsored science journal

\nOxford University Press (OUP) announced it will cease publishing the academic journal Forensic Sciences Research (FSR) after 2025, following ethical concerns about several studies involving DNA samples from ethnic minorities in China, The Guardian reported. FSR, sponsored by China\u2019s Ministry of Justice and published by OUP since 2023, is linked to China\u2019s Academy of Forensic Science.<\/p>\n
The journal has faced criticism over research on Uyghurs and other minorities under heavy surveillance in Xinjiang. Critics question whether participants freely consented to DNA collection, which may aid mass surveillance. One 2020 study analyzed blood samples from 264 Uyghurs in \u00dcr\u00fcmqi, with authors connected to China\u2019s state security and police. OUP issued an expression of concern in 2024 but did not retract the paper.<\/p>\n
Two other FSR papers have been retracted due to ethical issues, both involving researchers affiliated with Chinese police. Concerns arise because forensic research in China often involves state security bodies without independent oversight.<\/p>\n
Uyghurs in Xinjiang face intense surveillance and mass detention, with reports of compulsory DNA collection for \u201chealth checks.\u201d Human rights groups and the UN have condemned these practices.<\/p>\n
Yves Moreau, a DNA analysis expert, welcomed OUP\u2019s decision but criticized its limited public explanation. FSR will be taken over by KeAi, a China-based publisher affiliated with Elsevier.
