Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have developed the world\u2019s smallest self-contained bipedal robot, standing just under 1.5 inches tall\u2014roughly the size of a LEGO minifigure, SciTechDaily reported. Named \u201cZippy,\u201d the robot can walk, turn, skip, and climb small steps using only its internal battery, actuator, and control system.<\/p>\n
Developed under a National Science Foundation-funded project led by professors Aaron Johnson and Sarah Bergbreiter, the robot is designed to explore how walking functions at miniature scales. With a walking speed equivalent to 10 leg lengths per second, Zippy is also the fastest power-autonomous bipedal robot by that measure.<\/p>\n
Its compact size enables Zippy to navigate tight spaces, making it a potential tool for emergency search and rescue, industrial inspection, and scientific exploration. Future developments include adding cameras and sensors for autonomous navigation.
