Afghan women urge UN to reject Taliban and act on rights violations

Afghan women activists have urged the international community not to recognize the Taliban government and to take immediate action to protect the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan. Speaking during the 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, survivors and activists described worsening repression under Taliban rule.<\/p>\n
Fatima Amiri, a survivor of the 2022 attack on the Kaaj education center in Kabul, called for global action, saying, \u201cJustice is not enough. The world must support girls fighting for their right to education.\u201d She stressed that the UN and member states should not cooperate with the Taliban if they cannot change its policies.<\/p>\n
Poet Maryam Mitra warned of systematic oppression, while an activist, speaking from inside Afghanistan, shared her personal experience of being forced to marry off her daughter under Taliban pressure.
