Millions across US and Europe unaware they have life-threatening liver condition, study finds<\/p>\n
More than 15 million people across the US, UK, Germany, and France are living with the most aggressive form of fatty liver disease without knowing it, according to new research. The condition, known as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), is an advanced stage of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), previously referred to as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.<\/p>\n
MASH is linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular and kidney disease, and liver cancer. Researchers found that 3\u20134% of adults in the studied countries have MASH, yet only 18% are diagnosed\u2014leaving the majority undetected. The study, published in The Lancet Regional Health \u2013 Europe and presented in Barcelona, calls for doubling diagnosis rates.<\/p>\n
Traditionally identified through biopsy, MASH can now be diagnosed using non-invasive tests like blood panels, ultrasounds, and MRI scans. Experts urge routine screening for high-risk groups, including people with type 2 diabetes and obesity. Researchers also highlighted the potential of GLP-1 weight loss drugs, such as Wegovy and Mounjaro, in managing the disease. <\/p>\n
