At least 151 people, including many children, have died following severe flooding in Mokwa, a town in Nigeria\u2019s northern Niger state, the CNN reported. The floods, triggered by heavy rainfall early Thursday, submerged homes in the Kpege neighborhood while residents were asleep. <\/p>\n
More than 3,000 people have been displaced, and the death toll may rise as search operations continue, according to the state\u2019s emergency agency spokesperson, Ibrahim Hussaini. Among the victims was the family of Mokwa resident Hassan Abdullahi, who lost nine relatives. \u201cWe lost everything,\u201d he said, describing the devastation.<\/p>\n
The Niger state government called the incident \u201cheartbreaking\u201d and confirmed that two communities were worst affected. Nigeria\u2019s disaster management agency, NEMA, noted the country faces frequent annual flooding.
