Syrian asylum applications in the European Union have dropped to their lowest level in over a decade, following the fall of President Bashar Assad, according to the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA). In February, Syrians filed approximately 5,000 asylum requests across the EU\u2019s 27 member states, along with Switzerland and Norway\u2014a 34% decline from January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The EU\u2019s Migration Commissioner, Magnus Brunner, highlighted the data as evidence of how regional stability impacts migration trends. The United Nations reports that hundreds of thousands have since gone back to Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In total, around 69,000 asylum applications were lodged in February, continuing a downward trend that began in October 2024. Syrians ranked third among applicants, following Venezuelans and Afghans.
