Authorities are investigating a case of suspected vandalism after approximately 500,000 honey bees were found dead at a Virginia bee farm, the Independent reported. The incident, which occurred on April 13 at Rock Hill Honey Bee Farms, caused an estimated $20,000 in damages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Farm owner Jerry Mattiaccio discovered the scene when he arrived at his five-acre property and noticed his gates had been locked with heavy-duty chains. He later found the bee colonies\u2014around 60 in total\u2014dead, with signs consistent with pesticide poisoning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mattiaccio, 62, said the attack appeared deliberate and noted that the damage targeted his growing business, which had expanded to over 1,100 colonies since he began beekeeping in 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Stafford County Sheriff\u2019s Office has opened an investigation. Meanwhile, Mattiaccio has urged supporters to help by purchasing honey at his farmers’ markets in various nearby towns.
