The Masjid Ali Bin Abi Talib, commonly known as Lakemba Mosque, has submitted a proposal to the Canterbury-Bankstown Council to broadcast the Islamic call to prayer, or adhan, in the Sydney suburb of Lakemba, Iqna reported. The mosque seeks approval to install four external loudspeakers on its minaret to broadcast the adhan for five to fifteen minutes every Friday before the midday Jummah prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If approved, Lakemba Mosque would become the first in Sydney to issue the weekly call to prayer year-round. Planning documents highlight that approximately 61.2% of Lakemba’s population identifies as Muslim, stating that the adhan is a familiar sound that fosters community unity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The proposal compares the adhan to Christian church bells, noting that similar practices occur in Sydney’s central business district. An independent acoustic assessment confirms that the adhan would comply with local noise regulations.
