Of these, 134 graves have been exhumed\u201480 from the Baath period and 54 from the ISIS era\u2014while 87 remain unexcavated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The total number of recovered remains now stands at 7,709, with 4,451 linked to the Baath regime and 3,258 from the ISIS period. Among the most harrowing sites is the Samawa desert, where mass graves of Kurdish women and children underscore the genocidal intent of Saddam Hussein\u2019s policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"455\" height=\"294\" src=\"https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-17-113405.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-120845\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-17-113405.png 455w, https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-17-113405-300x194.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 455px) 100vw, 455px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kurdish population suffered immense persecution during Saddam\u2019s rule, epitomized by the Halabja chemical attack in 1988, which killed over 5,000 civilians in one day. The Anfal genocide campaign (1986-1989) forcibly disappeared or executed more than 180,000 Kurds, with many still unaccounted for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the 37th anniversary of the Halabja attack, Kurdish leaders reiterated the Iraqi government&#8217;s responsibility to address these historical crimes. President Masoud Barzani emphasized the need for recognition of Halabja\u2019s provincial status and compensation for survivors.
