Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called on Kazakhstan to act on recommendations made during the UN Human Rights Council\u2019s Universal Periodic Review, Jurist News reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The review, which involved 103 state delegates, resulted in 294 recommendations addressing various human rights issues, including gender-based violence, and the rights of people with disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Key concerns include accountability for human rights violations linked to the January 2022 protests, where the government used excessive force and torture against demonstrators. Multiple countries urged Kazakhstan to investigate these allegations and end impunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite not being a signatory to the Convention against Torture, Kazakhstan has accepted the Committee against Torture’s competence to address non-fulfillment allegations. In response to the review, Kazakhstan established a Constitutional Court in November 2022, allowing citizens to appeal legal issues free of charge.
