Independent MP Iqbal Mohamed countered that a ban would be ineffective, advocating instead for educational programs to raise awareness about the associated health risks. Downing Street acknowledged the health risks but stated there are no plans to change existing laws, which currently prohibit marriages between siblings, parents, or children, but not between first cousins.
