Rwanda sees a significant increase in the number of new Muslims, with an estimated 1,000 people converting to Islam every month, according to Sheikh Musa Sindayigaya, the Mufti of Rwanda and head of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs. This shift reflects the growing popularity of Islam, particularly among the youth and Christian families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Islam came to Rwanda over 100 years ago through Muslim traders. Despite restrictions and persecution during the Belgian colonial period, Muslims continued to spread their faith. Over time, and despite the isolation they faced, their influence in Rwandan society began to grow, especially after their positive role during the 1994 genocide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Public debates between Muslim and Christian scholars have been a major factor contributing to the conversion of many people to Islam. Special missionary institutes in Kigali and other cities welcome and guide new Muslims. These efforts, along with cultural openness and peaceful coexistence, have made Islam one of the fastest-growing religions in Rwanda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
