Shia Muslims hold Husseini rituals to mark Karbala tragedy

Millions of Shia Muslims around the world annually commemorate the great tragedy of Karbala with various forms of traditional Husseini rituals.

 

The mourners take part in processions held in mosques and streets with different traditions to mark the martyrdom anniversary of the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him; Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, and his companions in Karbala.

Shia Muslims in Manhattan, New York, took part in an annual march commemorating Ashura anniversary.

The mourners distributed water bottles with Ashura messages sticker to non-Muslims. 

A large number of Afghani, Iranian, and Iraqi Americans, along with native white American converts took part in this event.

The tragedy of Ashura leaves a permanent mark on the soul of any free and compassionate spirit, regardless of religion or race.
