International organization: Bahrain encourages a culture of impunity

Americans for Democracy and Human Rights in Bahrain said that the human rights situation in Bahrain is very disturbing, noting that the government has closed any space for civil society or political opposition.

The organization made oral interventions during the resumption of the United Nations Human Rights Council, in which it said that the government of Bahrain blatantly ignored the universal periodic review process by not implementing the vast majority of the recommendations.

One of the main recommendations during the universal periodic review of Bahrain was to demand the release of all political prisoners who were arbitrarily detained for exercising their freedom of expression.

The organization’s delegate said that the Human Rights Council should demand Bahrain, as a member of this body, to unconditionally release all political prisoners and immediately compensate them for the damage caused by the government.

It also called for accountability against the widespread culture of impunity among senior officials in the country, and said, “No serious investigations have been carried out into cases of extrajudicial killings committed by members of the Ministry of Interior and other security officials in Bahrain.”

It stated that officials such as Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Talal bin Muhammad Al Khalifa, Hisham Al Zayani and others were not investigated due to serious allegations of torture.

It called on the Human Rights Council to demand that Bahrain investigates the crimes committed by these people, and also called on Bahrain to fully implement all the recommendations of the universal periodic review.
