The so-called “Islamic State ” (IS) has burnt more than 1500 books  from the Library of the University of Mosul and threw hundreds of others in the river.

Analysts compare IS acts with Mongols acts during their invasion to Baghdad in 1250 AD where they showed no discretion, destroying mosques, hospitals, libraries, and palaces. The books from Baghdad’s libraries were thrown into the Tigris River in such quantities that the river ran black with the ink from the books. The world will never truly know the extent of what knowledge was lost forever when those books were thrown into the river or burned.

Zuhair Mohammad, Iraqi political activists, said that IS burned all the books of Mosul University and only kept Ibn Taymiya books.

Mosul University professors said that IS is working to empty the city of scholars, intellectuals and personalities who are known for their moderation.
