Bahraini rights campaigners are calling on Manama to grant two women detainees access to their families and lawyers.

19-year-old Fatima Daoud Hassan and 31-year-old Zakia al-Berbouri were arbitrarily detained in the Bahraini village of Nuwaidrat on May 17.

According to activists, the reasons for the pair’s arrest and their condition remain unknown.

Brief phone calls from the two to their families revealed that they are being held at the Criminal Investigation Directorate.

Rights groups accuse Manama of jailing a handful of Bahraini women for their activism or in an act of reprisal against their male relatives.
