Five militants, including a key Taliban commander, Mullah Sayed Ahmad, were killed and two others injured after security forces aircraft targeted their positions in the northern Afghan province of Sari Pul on Thursday, an army spokesman Nasratullah Jamshidi said.

“Acting upon intelligence report, the security forces aircraft pounded Taliban hideouts in Mirza Olang area of the restive Sayad district early Thursday, killing notorious commander Mullah Sayed Ahmad along with four of his armed men and injuring two others,” Jamshidi said.

Mirza Olang has been the scene of brutal fighting over the past few months and militants had killed more than 30 villagers, all civilians, some six weeks ago, forcing hundreds to leave their houses.
