The International Organization of Shia Rights Watch said in a statement that “The news from the devastated town of Awamiyah confirms the population’s exposure to collective punishment by the Saudi authorities, which constitutes a flagrant violation of international human rights law and a worldwide criminal offense.”

“The Saudi authorities are using artillery and tank shells against a protest movement that confronted the nature of the oppressive and marginal policies practiced by the state against Shias in general and the people of Awamiyah in particular,” the statement continues.

Rare interviews with Western media local activists in Awamiyah tell The Independent of shocking conditions faced by civilians in a secretive battle between Saudi Army and the empty-handed Shia civilians.
