While a large number of pilgrims are still on their way towards the holy city of Karbala, Iraq, millions are already present for Arbaeen.

Arbaeen marks the 40th day after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein and his faithful companions in the 680AD Battle of Karbala.

Each year, huge crowds of Shias march towards Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, is located, to perform mourning rituals.

The number of arrivals is estimated to reach 30 million pilgrims, forming the world’s largest human gathering.
