Syrian government forces liberated most of the Al-Farafira district northwest of Aleppo’s historic Old City and advanced the frontline for the first time in years, a military source told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

The source estimated that the area could be mopped up in the coming hours, noting that militants left behind ammunition and weapons, including heavy machine guns.

“For the first time in several years, we have been able to move the front in Aleppo. We managed to liberate more than half of the Al-Farafira district. The terrorists have retreated, the campaign is continuing,” the source said.
