At least 50 people are dead after a bus crashed into a fuel-tanker on the Kabul-Kandahar highway in the southern Afghan province of Zabul.

“20 others were wounded in the crash which set fire to both vehicles in the Jaldak area of Shahr-e Safa district,” Zabul’s governor Bismillah Afghanmal said on Sunday.

The dead and wounded were transferred to Zabul’s main hospital in Qalat city, Afghanmal said.

According to the governor, the bus belonged to a local tour agency, and was travelling towards Kabul from Kandahar when it crashed with an oncoming tanker.

73 people were killed and more than 50 others were wounded on the same highway in Ghazani province last May.
